Med Question

My foster dog is on some pills for a lung infection. It is called "Orbax".
She has one per day in the mornings.Well I was cracking them in half and sticking it in canned food for her.

Today I was informed (by mom) that when you crack some meds in half they do not work...I wondered if anyone knew about this one? Does it affect this pill?
Because I didn't think cracking it in half would affect it! These are big pills,so I was trying to make things easier.

Well a lot of pills (for human at least) are designed to dissolve at a certian speed. Splitting the pill increases the surface area therefore increasing the rate of reaction within the body and releasing the medication faster then it may be intended to be released at.

I am not sure if this applies to medication meant for animals because a lot of times pills have to be split in order to give the proper dosage.

I would personally contact the vet and ask.

I actually got my answer in a dog forum I posted in.
It is fine with these pills,as they are "easy breakable tabs" anyway and the members over there sent me a link about the different meds and whatnot. Thanks anyway.

I was just kind of worried, since the few days I have had her I was cracking the pills and then tonight found out it could of been bad for the meds.

I've heard that, too. Not sure I believe it, though...

Generally time release type meds are in capsules, which you should not break open. I think for most regular pills it shouldn't be a problem unless you are told specifically not to.

Yeah,these are not capsules.
Just easily breakable pills. From the info I got,it is okay to break these ones up.I am glad because it sure makes things easier! They are HUGE! Simone loves her food anyway,so I just stick the pill in some wet food and it's gone in a second.

It's great when they will take pills easily like that.

I think it should be fine as long as it is a tablet that does not react that much when exposed to oxygen.
