Samson Update #3

Previous updates on the forums...

2) http://www.paw-talk.net/forums/showthread.php?t=22434
---------------

The second blood test we took to try and figure out FOR SURE whether or not Samson was also suffering from Lyme disease or if it is just the vaccine showing up in the blood work has just come back...

The results are NEGATIVE for Lyme Disease and Positive for Vaccine....

So.... it looks like Samson does NOT have Lyme Disease.

That's a step in the right direction

We're still waiting on the final radiologist's review of the x-rays to confirm the OCD and set the date for the surgeries on his shoulders.

I just took a picture of him but for some reason he doesn't seem as thrilled with the news ... Hopefully in a couple of months after surgery and rehab he'll have a different outlook on life

I sure wish we could get to the "feeling better" part a LOT FASTER!

- Deb

That is great news about the Lyme. Yayy for Samson in that one.

Poor baby. I hope he has a speedy recovery. I'm sure he knows what a wonderful family he has.

Deb You all have been through so much. I am so glad to hear it isn't Lyme disease. How did you like the Dr on Tues? Was it the same vet you told me about?
Aww Samson is so cute. Bless his heart. Give him a hug from me!
I hope everything is ok and he has a fast recovery. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Yes...same doc. I like the guy and did confirm it was the same doc that did a lot of turtle work for me a while back lol.

I'm having to make a decision between him and the Vet Specialists in Maitland...

He says he does bone surgery about 2 times per week vs the specialists that do it all day long every day but he also says he has done THIS surgery several several times and feels 100% confident doing it. I do believe him...

He will cost about a grand per shoulder whereas the vet specialists will cost about $2,500 per shoulder and both of course will cost extra for the after-care, x-rays, meds and rehab etc. The hydro rehab looks like it'll run about $100 per 20 minutes blah blah blah...

Part of me wants to just let the specialists do it because they have the tools and are more experienced. The other part knows I can't afford the aftercare if I spend it all on the surgery so that part wants to let this doctor do the surgery so we can get it done and afford the after care.

If I didn't trust this doc I wouldn't use him...but I do trust him so I'm leaning toward letting him do the surgery for $3,000 less that way we'll be able to afford the hydrotherapy...

Thoughts?

Ohh so it was the same Dr who saw your turtles!

Ahh wow what a hard thing to decide. I totally see your point, you have to have money saved afterward for his therapy. We liked him when we went there. I say if you trust him and he made you feel confident, like you said, go with him. Is there any way you can get a consult with the Dr. at the Maitland Specialists, so you can meet the surgeon there? What does your husband think?

We are here for ya, hon!

Surgeon/Radiologists at Maitland are the ones we're waiting on to review the x-rays and provide their input. It would also be the Vet Specialists clinic in Maitland that we would be using for rehab. They have the underwater treadmills etc there and the doc here feels that type of rehab would be prudent to Samson's recovery.... It's the surgery itself really that wouldn't be done there unless I find another 3grand.....

Hubby is leaning toward getting the specialists to do the surgery because he fears if something went wrong we wouldn't be able to live with ourselves.....

OMG

Ok...I'm wrong LOL

I finished the post and I looked at hubby and said.... "gosh it's hard trying to figure out what to do"... he looked at me with the straightest face and said "No it's not...It's just hard seeing you take this long to struggle with it." for which he then explained that I really needed to just balance out the credit cards and get the final referral for the specialists at the maitland clinic. He feels we'd never be able to forgive ourselves if something went wrong and the local doc didn't have the tools to deal with it.

So I just got off the phone with Samson's main doctor who is writing up the referrals now so that I can call tomorrow and make the appointment at the Maitland clinic who quite frankly has some of the best docs in the state

THEN!!! I called the clinic as a "secret shopper" and just asked them how much it was for OCD surgery. Now remember they were more than double the price when I asked them about the TPO surgery. Well to my SHOCK!!!!! They are only $100 more per shoulder for the OCD than the local doc is!!!!!

Heck yeah! For $200 the peace of mind and all of the hightech equipment is SOOOOO WORTH IT!!!

I really had no idea how relieved I would feel but I'm totally bouncing in my chair right now! I feel soooooooooooooooo much better knowing Samson will have all of his care done at the Maitland clinic.... soooooooooooo much better!!!!!

Now we just gotta hope for a QUICK appointment so we can get him started

It feels so nice to hear about positive vibes going Samson's way! And it's good things are looking up for him.

It's really good that you have such highly qualified specialists in your area and that it didn't cost as much as you originally thought! (That's probably one of the best reliefs ever!)

On a side note ...
Did you contact Samson's breeder to tell them about all of this? I wonder how they would react?
