whippets vs italian greyhounds

i've always wanted an italian greyhound because they're so freaking cute. my g/f suggested i get a whippet instead because they're bigger and heartier than ig's and they look just like them. she works at a local pet store/vet and she see's italian greyhounds come in frequently with broken legs just from jumping off of furnature. it makes sense. i'm not doubting her.
my question is is a whippet that much heartier? is a whippet a dog you can rough-house with. can they jump from heights such as the tailgate of a truck or to and from the seat of a truck? i understand they're one of the fastest dogs. my favorite thing is to play fetch with my brothers brittany with a tennis ball and a tennis racquet. is this something i could do with a whippet without fear of the dog getting injured from over running itself? i can see an italian greyhound tripping and breaking something at a full speed run.

Italian greyhounds are very fragile but are sweet dogs, whippets are quite 'sturdy' and are again, very freindly. Whippets can jump good distances without injuring themselves but do have their limits too. Both these dogs are loving, im glad to see your thinking of your dogs health with its active lifestyle, I will post some links later

Whippets are sighthounds, therefore cannot be let off leash in open areas. They must be kept in fenced areas, unless leashed.

I like whippets much better then IG's.I am a huge sighthound fan though.
