Is it a box turtle, or a tortoise?

I don't know about the state laws of Texas concerning box turtles, but the native desert tortoises are protected by federal law and it is illegal to keep them as pets.

In general, it is not a good idea to keep wild animals. Especially turtles. Most turtle populations in the US are in a STEEP decline, and people taking them as pets is one of the reasons.

If you think this is a real tortoise, you should contact the state fish and wildlife and let them have it so that it can be released in a good environment, hopefully to an area in which they are rare or being reintroduced.

In no way should you take a wild animals as a pet..

JMO..
