My new dart frog

A little over a week ago I bought a dart frog at a local reptile expo . As some of you probably know I had been wanting one for a while.

I ended up getting an adult Dendrobates leucomelas. I chose my frog because the others were all young and I really wanted an adult for my first dart. There's a good chance I'll be upgrading to a larger tank and getting another one . I just wanted to start with a single frog.

He hides a lot but seems pretty healthy and has a great appetite.
Here are some pictures I took the day after I got him:

The tank isn't quite as bare now and I've added leaf litter .

Thanks! He doesn't have a name yet. I'll probably give him a name that's fine for both genders since he could be female . I don't know why I keep called s/he a he but I am.

Thank you!

I haven't thought of any names yet. Usually they suddenly come to me but if there are two I like a lot then maybe I'll do a poll .

Hehe, thank you!

With fish I tend to refer to ones I don't know the genders of as female...I don't know why .

Actually, they aren't poisonous in captivity . This is mostly due to having a different diet then in the wild.

Technically you could touch captive-bred darts but it's not a good idea to handle frogs. The oils from your hands can harm them as will small amounts of soap and other things. Dart frogs are nervous anyways and handling is going to seriously stress them out.

Aww I love Dart Frogs. I went to the aquarium this past year and they had a huge exhibit of frogs. You should have seen the size of some of the frogs they had there. I don't think they had yellow dart frogs but they had red and blue. I just love their colors....not very good camo though.

I like the name juicy...hehe
