Hi, I just adopted my first prairie dog so please bear with me.
A little background: He's two years old, not neutered. The people I got him from said they didn't have the time to spend with him that he needed which is why they were getting rid of him.
He lets me pet him but is very jumpy, as soon as I open the cage he runs out and I have to chase him around to catch him. As he's running around his mouth is wide open and his teeth are sticking out, is this normal? Is he pissed off? I can't tell if he'll be ok with me just scooping him up or if he's walking around like that as a warning sign to stay away.
Anyway, after a few minutes of being a chicken, I've picked him up and he hasn't bit me..YET. There's been a few times he's moved quickly at me as if he was going to bite but I'm not really sure what he was going to do. He also chirps loudly, does that mean go away? LOL He is very restless and will not just let me hold him..he's always trying to run and then gets away a little and obviously gets irritated. I'm just curious to see if any of this is normal behavior..will he get used to the new surroundings? I have plenty of time to spend with him so that won't be an issue, I just don't want to get bit! Those teeth are intimidating.
Do you guys let them roam? Do you always keep them on your lap? Will they stay on your lap? Is 2 years too old to re-train? The guy that had him before me had no problem with him apparently and I saw pictures of him sitting up in the guys hand very relaxed. Any hope he'll just chill out?
Thanks so much for any help!
