Yea I considered that too. I might look for a good price on them but I won't buy anything expensive bc I doubt I'd even be able to lock him in and I don't want it in my way. As it is, he drags his pilows out from my desk and they get stuck under the wheels of my chair :p I could just lose it every time my chair stops on them. Since I got the funds now this week I will glance through the classifies and see what I can turn up. Thanks ^^

As it turns out, valerian root and melatonin both seem to conk him almost immediately. I just gave him valerian and the guy downstars is pounding the floor with a hammer Coco is laying underneath my desk. Now, he is alert and if I get up he will too and whine and pant.. So I don't know what to do for long term calmer. My roommate's dad said his dog (in Ottawa) takes valium to calm it before going to the groomer. It's such a lovely day outside!! I wish I could go out and read my book ^^

Update. After coming home yesterday to find Matt's subwoofer speaker completely destroyed (the cord was pulled out of it, and lay in melted bits.. I kid you not, it looked as if bunny might have gotten into it but it lacked the chew marks and bunny was safe in her closet) it still boggles us as to how he managed that one. The carpet was ripped up again... Another thing people will instantly blame on bunny. Coco had an absolute freak out. He could have killed himself. Let alone, burn the house down.

I got online to look for crates. Got a couple offers then Lisa messaged me saying she had one perfect size she had fro Beagle Paws fostering. I went over and got it. Anyway, Coco may be old and have canine alzheimers but he ain't dumb. He measured it and sized it up and decided the dentastick in there wasn't worth the time. -_-/ So I presented him with cheese. I got him to go inside and praised him, didn't close it or anything. I did lock him in just for 5 minutes so he could the idea. . . Listen, we were running on short time bc this morning he HAD to be locked in for 7 hrs. So we did a flash crash course in crating. Coco didn't like it.

This morning I had no problem diapering him up and getting him to go in for a treat. I gave him a valerian and melatonin pill too. And I cast the fan to spread arounf the room, not directly on the kennel. He didn't like it and immediately began to whine and panic, which I expected. I continued to get ready and praise him, gave him cheese then began my ignore him process. Then we left.

When I got home after school I didn't hear a sound. Usually he knows when we come and you can hear him barking half way down the street ( another thing that perplexes me due to his age). I crept up the stairs and still nothing. I got worried then bc I thought maybe he had a heart attack or passed out from dehydration or something. I spied from the top of the landing and he wasn't moving so I began to get worried. He didn't stir until I sat in front of the kennel and said "Coco" still thinking he was dead. He popped up, came out didn't whine once while I got ready to take him outside. I am still shocked.

Now at the same time, the construction on the house stopped today when the landlord's father went back home. SO the house was quiet and he had nothing to be afraid of. And since I came home he has been sleeping like a charm. I guess he's catching up on sleep he missed the week and a half of house renos.

I don't expect him to readily accept the crate tomorrow knowing that he will be in it for a couple hours. (tomorrow we gets out of class early so can come home only 3 hours after going in if we choose) But just thought I'd update. Out of necessity we got Coco an emergency crate. It might turn out to be more permanent if he keeps taking to it, as of now he's preferring the bed and under my desk still for sleeping.

I am still shocked he took so well to it. And you can keep the crate for as long as you need it (unless I decide to take another foster dog in! :D...but I don't plan on that anytime soon...taking a break). Crates are great and dogs learn it is a safe haven,as I have told you.

Aw that's good. See old dogs can learn new tricks! That's usually how it goes with crate training - they cry in there for awhile but once they learn that that's not going to get them let out they usually calm down and accept it. We crate trained Kit when he was a puppy and now he still likes sleeping in his crate sometimes, even though now that he's potty trained we don't use it to crate him in much anymore.

Thanks guys. My only regret now is not getting it sooner. My thick head thought it knew better :/ I really thought he wouldn't take to it.. He cannot be locked in a room see, that's how he got into so much trouble during the renos. And he absolutely refuses to go in it by himself. Even for treats. He needs to be pushed in there :/

I have fostered dogs like that. They feel really comfortable in the crate and were crate trained, they just would not go in by themselves.
