It could be neurological, nerve damage doesn't means paralysis, and I've seen rats that are paralyzed from the waist down heal and walk again. What I mean is that there are different levels of nerve damage.
Anyway, I'm glad that it healed on it's own, it's true that with an animal so small, there is little a vet could do about it, usually just make sure that it's eating and drinking, urinating and defecating and that's about it.
