Several people on this forum use hemp bedding, I'm not sure about the pros and cons of hemp... so you'll have to wait for more replies on that one. I have heard that it doesn't get smelly as fast.

Actually aspen wood bedding is safe for rats. It doesn't contain the dangerous oils like pine and cedar, that can make them sick. I use aspen and it is very cheap and it doesn't stink after a week for me. The bag that I buy for $5 just lasted me 4 months!

Some people use a fleece bedding and just wash it. I use woodchips on the bottom and then use fleece and hammock on the wire levels so its more cozy on their feet.

Also if you're worried about the smell, then litter training can really help with that!

Thanks i will just wait and see what others have to say. I also use fleece on my levels being that i make my cage myself. Used 1/2 inch hardware cloth and steel sides i make at work. Will post a pic of it when I can. I also have a big pocket from an old pair of Jnco twin cannon jeans that they just love to hide in. Its so cute all three will get in there and lay heads out like a sleeping bag.

I use aspen and sometimes use aspen and Yesterdays News.I also get shredded paper for free by the bags full from mom and mix that in.

Hemp is hard to get around here and expensive when you can get it.But I have tried it and I liked it.I just wish it was cheaper.I mean the only bags I have seen were small and I am not willing to pay such a high price for less then what I pay for a bigger bag of aspen, when they are both safe.I pay about $10 for a huge bag of aspen which lasts me a few months. The bag of hemp was about $7 or $8,but was not even half of the amount I get with the aspen. The only reason I tried it was because they were out of aspen at the time.

I didn't notice much difference from the aspen. They both held odors the same. The hemp was softer though.

If you can get it,go for it and try it out.
