I bought a chinchilla saturday morning and that night he began to have diarrhea. I am using the same food the pet store sold me where i bought him. Oxbow pellets and hay. He seems to be drinking and eating okay and he is very active. What should i do? Is it to soon to take him to the vet?

Does he have soft squishy poo or is it completely runny?
What I would do is pull all the pellets (oxbow is a good brand), but for right now offer nothing but good quality hay and filtered or reverse osmosis water (bottled, not tap). You can also offer either acidophilus or activated charcoal. If it doesn't clear up within a couple days, then I would take him to a vet even if only for a stool culture.
