Degu not eating

Hello everyone....

I hope someone can give me information....

I have one lone degu boy....he has been on his own for a year and a half since his brother died, and he is a pretty happy playful cuddling boy...

I noticed that he has not really eaten today.....any of his kibble....this morning he had his vitamin, and then tonight around dinner time, out of desperation, I gave him one piece of pasta, and about four corn flakes, which he ate....

He is drinking, and seems to be his normal self otherwise....I just rubbed some olive oil on his tummy in case it was a problem there....I am just really worried, as they are small, and I know from my other boy that they can go downhill easy....

How long can he go without eating before I really have to worry? As far as I can tell, it has only been about 12-18 hours so far, with only those treats. I put 12 pellets in his bowl, so I can get a clear count in the morning as to what he eats, if anything. Anything I should be looking for, or can do? Taking him to the vet right now is not really an option, as there is only one in my entire area that even sees rodents, and to be honest, both he and his brother have gone there in the past, and he does not seem to know much more than us. Also, I just had surgery this morning and do not drive, so not even really physically possible. Any advice/information would be great. Thanks! I am so worried.....

12-18 hours is actually a very long time for a degu to go without food. You absolutely need to get some real food into him...I would give him some Critical Care (with a syringe if necessary).
That was actually my plan, I keep a bag of that on hand from experience.....when his brother died, about a month later, we had to force feed him for three weeks because he was depressed. We keep him out of his cage as much as we can and with us so he is not lonely now since that happened.

Anyway, he actually seems better this morning, I brought him into my bedroom last night as I was worried and wanted to keep an eye on him. I saw him eating hay in the middle of the night, and a carrot, and he ate four pellets over night too, and two more since I woke up this morning. So, I am gonna keep an eye on him today, I am off work this week due to my surgery, so I can watch him, which will make me feel better, but he is already seeming better.

Thanks so much for the help though....:)
