I have fairly extensive knowledge of gerbil husbandry (after researching for a year), and for a while now I've been wanting to keep some. The space I have for them is a 2ft x 2ft x 2ft hutch-like enclosure, part of something I'm building.
In volume, this amounts to about 60 US gallons. However, in terms of floor space, it's around the size of a 30 or 40 gallon breeder tank.
After reading up on how many gerbils one should keep, I've come to the conclusion that I'd be best off keeping a colony of 4 males in an enclosure that size.
Would you agree? Or would you suggest a different number/gender as the optimum?
I would personally like to do that, but I wonder if anyone here has experience with a pair in a cage that size? Because some say they fall out if they have too much space due to territorial issues....
