Hey !
I am preparing to care for a hedgehog. My mom and I went shopping today. We got a large cage (140 cm by 60 cm), a heatingmat to keep the temparature right, food ( cat food and we're going to get alive food + fruits and veggies when he is with us). We also got a litter box and a house for him to sleep in. For in the cage we are planning to put in paper, then wood shavings and a little hay. We are going to place the cage in a quiet room. I've read about the hedgehogs online and right now I am reading a book about them too. We are getting him from a good breeder that we trust, and I looked up a vet who knows about hedgehogs. So is there anything I forgot, or got some advice ?

Hey there good luck with your hedgie!!! I was wondering what you were getting the hay for??

I use cat food too for my h'hog, but I use a combination.. which is expensive, I know, but someone suggested to me if you also wanted to give your hog a combination (for flavor and varying fiber/crude fat/crude protein), to ask your pet store if they give out samples. Certainly getting samples would be cheaper than buying more than one bag of cat food.

Be sure that the food you do buy is not in the shape of a peanut. Peanuts, and foods that are sized and shaped similar can get stuck in the roof of a hog's mouth and they can choke or worse!!

I hope you hog is more open to fruits and veggies. I have tried endlessly to get my hog to eat anything but her catfood and meal worms.. she is a little plump due to this fact (needs fiber from veggies), which is why I found a cat food high in fiber to supplement.

I noticed you are from Holland, do you know what kind of hedgehog you are getting? The advice I gave above is for an african pygmy... If you are getting a different kind, it may be different!
