My little Indiana Jones is having a really rough week. I was taking pics of the boys during cage cleaning/free range day. I noticed Jeffrey seemed a bit off. He'd lost some weight and was just not himself.

He was dozing after a while out, and I took some shots of him while he was sleeping. You can see it clearly in this pic with the flash on that he's not in good shape:

I fed him separately with some watery lab block porridge and ensure to make sure he was getting the calories and fluids and just watched him the next day. By evening he was a very sick boy, all puffed up in the back corner of the cage.

This morning we went to the vet. The vet said he lung and heart sounds are good. He had no signs of tumors or such. He has put him in AB's in case it's some kind of infection, and because he was dehydrated he gave him a sub Q injection of fluids.

We are in the watch and wait and round the clock care mode right now to see if he rallies.

One day at a time. This is a fight for me and him. Syringe feeding ensure and electrolytes. AB regimen to see if it helps. If he's got an infection, the ab's should clear him up pretty soon. If there's something more serious, then there'll be nothing we can do. He is a fighter though. I thought I was losing him last night as he lay on my chest, but hours of warmth on me, and hourly ensure feedings kept him with me until this morning.

I'm guessing I'll know one way or another in the next couple of days.

Thank you all for pulling for my sweet boy. He went today to be with brother Windham. His little body was tired out from fighting, so I helped him cross over at the vet's with lots of hugs and kisses.

Storyseeker...I am so very very sorry. I wish I could say more but you know how hard it can be to find the right words for this.

We all loved Jeffrey and our thoughts are with him and you right now. I am sure Windham was very happy to see his buddy and I know sweet Jeffrey is very happy right now too, with all of his friends. Sad for us though. :(

I love you Jeffrey, and please give big hugs to my Klausse and Wolfie, and to Russell too. I know you are all having a wonderful time together right now.

This. If there's one thing that makes loss a bit easier, it's knowing that our beloved boys are gaining wonderful friends over the bridge...

Same thing here Breyer....we think about our boys playing and running with Russie, Windham (and now Jeffrey) and all of the ratty boys and girls who have passed on that are part of a big family, having a great time together and meeting new friends. It is comforting. Whenever I get sad about my boys and miss them terribly, (We have their framed pictures right on our computer desk, so of course we think of them and look at their pictures every day) I tell myself, "They are having a SUPER time, 24/7 with all their friends, having treats galore and so many adventures, I just know it. " Always makes me smile.

So comforting! Jeffrey was ready to go, and he'd lived a good adventurous full life. You know, I didn't cry nearly as much when Jeffrey passed as I did Windham. There's a sense of peace that he left when he was ready. That death is not always a bad thing, it's just another step and when he went he was okay with it. I could almost see little 'Indy' giving me a manly half smile over his shoulder and throwing me a cocky salute from the bridge of his battered brown fedora as he let go of his tired body.

Me: "Be careful on your way to the bridge little man"
Jeffrey: "What are you trying to do, scare me? You sound like my mother. We've known each other for a long time. I don't believe in magic, a lot of superstitious hocus pocus. I'm going after a find of incredible historical significance, you're talking about the boogie man. Besides, you know what a cautious fellow I am."
Me: "Don't forget your gun."

Heh heh, yep, sounds like "Indy" was probably rolling his eyes and saying, "Sheesh, moms are so protective...I have adventures and treasure ahead, ready to plunder, woo hoo! Mom, no crying, sheesh..."

Of course Marc and I always picture a local rodentia hangout/cocktail patio that all the boys head over to in the evenings for live entertainment, complete with pretty hanging lanterns, lakeside, with a huge open air patio and ratty drinks...

Mr. Ferret on lead guitar, hamsters with tambourines, big chunky guinea pig on drums, a handsome strapping rat boy bass player, and so forth, with Windham, Jeffrey, Klausse, Wolfgang, Russell and all their other buddies, meeting up with some girl ratties for a night of music and flirting, before a big morning of adventuring the next day.

Waiter: Would you all care for another round of zee strawberry yogurt margaritas?"

The Rat Pack: "Nooo, thanks Pierre, we have a big day tomorrow...Jeffrey is taking us into the fabled Jungle of Corn Cobs to look for the elusive Nom Nom Lair..." :D

(Of course, I do have one detail that is probably not accurate...all the boys would obviously not decline another round of strawberry yogurt margaritas...rats and yummies equals no moderation whatsoever! So on with a new round of ratty drinks! )

Yes, these images always comfort us too. I am sure everyone has their own pictures and scenarios in their heads of what the Bridge is like for our babies, but one thing for sure is we all know they are having SO much fun there, with no worries, no aches or pains and everything is wonderful for them. Makes me feel good about my boys too. :)
