sorry for the spelling of the word ceser. But I dont know how to spell it and right now dont have time to look it up. But any way can a rat have or be prone to cecers when young or old. I know any animals can have cercers and heart attacks. The reason is this and I will try to spell my best so you can understand me. I was haveing the old men I call them the older rats on the couch for play time when Goblin my old male about a good 2 years going on 3 did what looked like the grils in heat sorta but only what put me in the mind of a cecer. Then gone dead as a door nail. this was about now going on 4 days. He was fine eating seeds and playing then while cleaning he stoped and boom gone. I figered ok weird and quike and sad becuase I have had a lot of old ones pass recently and then some young ones. Which him passing was sudden but understandable becuase he was old. But the cecer like thing he did was like what meat loaf another oldie is doing except he cecers falls over then gets up and goes about his bizz.
None seem to have labored breathing the rat phone sounds clear and he is fine But I seen this happen 3 times know. At 1st I thought like Goblin until he got back up that is was maybe a heat attack stroke which ever you want to call it. But he keeps doing it not alot only 3 times know. and the 3rd time was only a half hour inbetween the 2nd. I would have to wait till me vet is open around 8:30 9 to get him in. what I am wondering is becuase they are old is this something that they do when its there time as in to old they can get this? All mine have passed basicly while we have sleep with no sighns and some peacefully pass. he dont sreeck or anything and licks me afterwords and grooms me and comes to me to cuddle like nothing happend. Is it maybe he is getting old and its his time to go? and if so do you think since he is old to let my vet even though I am gonna take him in ASAP I get ahold of her to put him down. Becuase with his age the same as Goblins he would just peoably suffer the longer it went on. And I dont want that. I am just wondering if this is commen old age and can young rats get it as well. Like MeatLoafs offspring? as in prone to it? I have seen nothing wrong with them and they are all happy as can be with no signs like him. So do you think I should start to say my good byes know? Basicly is this a sign of them just getting old?

Thank you Kendalle :D

Strokes and seizures can be and often are hereditary and you shouldn't be breeding these rats and if you have, you watch the offspring like a hawk, and they shouldn't be bred either.

Rats have seizures just before they pass, its part of the last nerve impulses, and I have seen/felt it many times. They stretch out and sometimes kick for a few seconds then they stop breathing, the heart usually fibrillates (beats very fast) and then stops.

or it could be a stroke, they hit very very fast. If its a milder stroke they often end up with a slight tilt and weakness on one side, some recover, some do not. If its a bad but not fatal stroke, they can become practically immobile, these rats need a steroid to reduce the inflammation on their brain to help them recover faster if they are going to.

Ongoing seizures usually worsen over time until it becomes fatal. You need to look into carefully padding and seizure-protecting the cage and environment for these rats. There is also the option of anti-seizure meds from your vet you could try.

They were both going on 3 years of age which is old for a rat and thanks for editing what I worte. I talked to my vet this moring and she said that yes it can be treated and seems like he is seizureing from old age. His off spring (the other that passed had none) are 6 months going on 7 and showed no signs. Acording the the vet yes the offspring could have this problem but do to the fact he has only just dont this she would say it is old age.
Granted I know things can be inherited but since he has never done this would you say its from age?I have never seen this in the rats that I have owned they have ushally passed while we were sleeping or just labord breathing then nothing.
I do want him around longer but since he is old and will more them likly be kept on meds till he dose pass should I go ahead and say good bye? as in put him down he has done it once more and is not walking with a tilt but moves a little then lays there. He takes food from me and eats it slowly and drinks with an eye droper so I can mon. how much he is taking in which is about 3 full ones so far. My vet said she would have to check him out but it sounds to her like I should say good bye. I have an opeaning tomorrow to take him in and its my desision to put him down. if the problem is curable with meds but prolonging his life to be on meds is no life for him and he is quite and old man. as in I would asume he would need to be on them till he passes?
Goblin did a shutter thing a little jerk and was gone. He was cleaning him self on the couch and then done this. Meat loaf started this now 4 days ago as in yesterday 4 days after Goblin I should state not that he's been doing this. for 4 days I dont know if I was clear on that before. since I wrote late last night early this morrning on here. I only cought him doing this yesterday. I have seen nothing since then but more less what looks like he is tired becuase he lays around. His breathing is clear for the most part but he has started the short breaths I call them but the rat phone is clear. I think its his time and even if meds would help would it be worth it to prolong his life if its old age kicking in knowing he will evenually get worse. He is giving me thouse its ok eyes or look I should say.
When he dose get up he dose what my pews and ruby eyes do sways a little like trying to focus and then slowly and a little wobbly comes to me. HE seems to me to be more is a daze then him self. I just want advice form some one that has had this happen if I should let go and have him put down insted of prolonged meds which will end in him leaving this world anyway? Depending on the vet check which I can go as late as tonight if I have to still but he has seizured 1 time around 10 am since then. She will be on call for me if I need her later on. She told me I could wait to say good bye or bring him over becuase he was him self this morning but after the last one not really him self anymore.
Granted i can fix up a cage and do all but is it fair depending on how advanced it is and his age to keep him in this world any longer. I want to say yes its worth it but that is my feelings and how I feel not how Meat loaf is feeling even on meds depending on if there is more underline damage.
what would you sugest Since you have delt with this? Let him cross the rain bow bridge or see how it goes with meds (depending on what the vet says)

We have decited or the vet did to put him down. He had what apeared an old frature to the head. She took exrays and showed me that it looks like he had at one time been either hit or fallen. He was little over a year when I had gotten him from some friends that took him. My friends neighbors were raising their own snake food and found it cheeper to buy the food then try to feed the rats healthy then nock them out and feed the snakes.
I asked her is this could be a birth defect or something eals and she told me that it looks old and not from a birth defect by how it was healed and looked. And if he was used to food or breeding food they could have tryed hiting him but insted of killing him they nocked him out and left him not thinking that can effect. I could see the frature that she pointed out. She siad that rats heal fast and ushally dont have problems like when they get sugery and cuts they ushally heal nicly but there are some times infections or old fratures that are fine when healed but can cuase problems later.
I asked her if she would check out his off spring I have before I breed to make shure that there is nothing just to be on the safe side. She told me that was not a problem. Basicly he got old and an old underling problem crept up that he never showed signs of till know.
Granted he may have never showed any signs but I was told that they can go threw this when its there time as well. And even with meds after a while its going to get worse weather it be 3 weeks or 3 months from know and he is just gonna suffer and get worse. And I have had him for over a year so he has to be going on 3 or is already. I hated to do it but at lest I know he will never have another one and know he can be young again and play with other rats.

If you don't know where he came from and his history, you really shouldn't be breeding him.

Seizures can be treated with medication, and they don't always get worse. Many animals have seizures which are kept under control for the duration of their lives though careful monitoring and medication.

I know that Seizures can be treated with medication, but he would have gotten worse acording to the vet weather on meds or not. He was old and he was just giving up. It was moreless his time to go. He was starting to just shut down is what my vet told me so the meds for his problem would have not really helped. Also he was about 3 or going on 3 at lest. He was an old rat.
We were lucky that he never had any probelms before but just on meds would not really help him after a while it would get more frekent and other problems could acure and it was better to let him go and not have him get worse. After a while he would have more less started shutting down more and be on more meds for more things that would have proably progressed the longer the was on meds or not.
IT was the vet who told me that he was progressed further then I suspected and she did when I decribed it to her on the phone. She told me that even on meds he would eventually have to get stuff for pain and basicly come to the point were we would just lay there dazed and have to be hand feed and basicly not be coherent anymore or responsive like he is was.
His problem came from an old trama he when threw and with his age progressed or developed not from gentics but from something that happend before I got him. it was better he not suffer and be placed on more meds later and be a zombie rat. Its better I let him go befor he got worse.
