Help with vet bills

I know a lot of people are experience financial hardships these days. While I believe that people should not get pets if they knowingly won't be able to afford their care, I understand that things can happen that are out of our control.

If you need to pay for non-emergency vet bills, consider having a yard sale, bake sale, selling things on ebay, etc., to help raise the money.

If you encounter an emergency, or just can't afford your pets vet costs, there are some options you can explore before making the hard decision to give up your pet.

First of all, call around and talk to vets. Some of them will be willing to set up some kind of a payment plan, so you can pay your bill over time instead of all at once. Call your local shelters and ask if they know of any low cost vets. Some shelters (ASPCA, for example) have their own vet clinics and may be able to treat your pet at a lower cost, or set up a payment plan.

If that isn't an option, you can consider using credit to pay for vet bills. Either a regular credit card, or you can apply for care credit.

If for some reason you can't use credit, or you don't have enough credit to cover your bill, there are some organizations out there that may be able to help you, if you are stuck in an emergency and meet their requirements.

Tails of hope - http://www.tailsofhopefoundation.org/about/what/what.html

UK assistance - http://www.petloversonline.co.uk/financial.htm

There are other organizations out there as well - There are some that deal with only a specific type of health issue (for example, one's that offer assistance to owners with pets who have cancer), and there are also some that deal with only local pet owners. If anyone knows of any organizations that I didn't post already, feel free to add them!

Most importantly, plan for emergencies before they happen! It's never too late to start saving up extra money for an emergency pet care fund. Even if you set aside just a small amount at a time, it's better than nothing.

Good thread idea :) I agree!
I had a garage sale to help raise money for fixing Smudge, and it worked out really well.
In addition, know that the best thing you can do to guarantee your vet will work with you in an emergency is to see your vet regularly.

Think at it from their perspective -- someone they've never seen before walks in with a dog that needs $1,000 of surgery. They know nothing about this person. Would you just give someone $1,000? On the other hand, if they see you every year and whenever your dog is sick, know where you live, and know who you are, don't you think it's a lot more likely that they'll at least say, "Well, ok, you can post-date some checks?"
