Just wondering who else saw the episode of "Hoarders" last night with the 1000+ rats? I only saw it today, when a friend shared the link with me.

omg. what happened? Were they tame or no?
I didn't see it (no cable) but this is the woman whose rats ended up populating the San Jose Humane Society, right? Poor ratties, and poor lady and her family for succumbing to this awful disease. :( Hope she got the help she needed...and I hope the rats are getting good families.
There is a link online.I don't have cable either,a friend sent me the link.

No,it is a man.He lived alone with over 1000+ rats. While I normally do not feel bad for these people,I felt bad for this man because it was clear he loved the rats.He just had the situation turn out of control. He started with 3 rats and then it turned into this mess.

The rats were brought to rescues/shelters and last I heard about 500 have been adopted. Many will probably be euthanized if they have not already for illness/injuries or simply because there are way too many.A few were euthanized on the show due to being injured badly.

Christine,yes...they are pet rats.
I just saw this show in the A & E website. You know, as depressing as it is for situations to get like this his whole segment was really hopeful. This is the first time I've ever seen a 'news/documentary' type segment treat rats as anything other than a vile infestation. It was clear through the whole production that the rats were valued, and Glenn was treated with respect and care. The only time it got overtly sensational was when they made a point of filming poor Glenn having to make a decision on putting down some of his injured rats.

Of the episodes I've ever watched, this is also the first person portrayed on Hoarders that wasn't portrayed as some kind of mental lost cause. The poor man was grieving. Horribly. Had he owned a less prolific animal, I don't think it would have ever become a hoarding situation. He seemed ready to start dealing with his loss. He broke my heart. I hope he's healing.

Small note, in that I hope that the female rat he kept, 'Commander Whitehead', wasn't pregnant. And if she wasn't, I hope they ended up allowing him to keep another female down the line. I'm going to follow the rat rescue site a little more closely, and maybe ask to see if they know how he's doing.

This situation is turning into a really positive thing, showing the best of what people are capable.

I'm glad to hear the show went well! I'm still waiting for it to air over here, and waiting pretty anxiously. I was really anxious when we first went in and had to get wired with microphones and do the first interviews, but a lot of that disappeared once we started pulling the rats out. A few hours in, and the exhaustion set in which I think helped us all forget there were a lot of eyes on us.

Glen actually did wind up keeping two female rats, one he calls Commander Whitehead and one named Captain Brownbod. I think they cut the portion from the show when he picked up Brownbod, but he was able to keep two girls on the condition that he would surrender any babies born and eventually let us help him get them spayed when they were ready and we could make the trip.

I spoke with Glen earlier today and while there is a long road to true recovery ahead of him, he is doing better. He was diligent about catching the rats we couldn't get on the first trip so that we could keep picking them up, and he has been really open allowing us back on the property. He got his well for his business fixed and his friends and family are rallying together to keep him on the right track. If he follows through and gets therapy, I think he will recover. I'm holding out a lot of hope for him, he is really trying very hard.

They also said this about the rats being picked up by their tails (which other folks had criticized on other forums):

We have several rats with very old tail injuries/missing tail bits, but there were no new injuries to tails as a result. Personally I do it in extreme situations, essentially exactly like this, in a different hoarder house, or at Andy's with these rats when someone has escaped a cage or slipped out of someone's grasp. I've also done it if I absolutely had to with aggressive or 'thrashing' rats. I don't like to, but sometimes it doesn't feel like there's a lot of choice. I think as long as you get them right by the base, there's a lower chance of them being hurt, and I try to only do it in situations where the chance of them getting hurt if I DON'T catch them is worse.

Yes,I don't watch the show normally, but the episodes I did see made the people out to look bad. I felt bad for Glen and at a few points,I admit was teary eyed. He truly loved his rats, but it got out of control. He did recognize the problem though. It was an emotional episode for me.

In many of these cases the people have a disorder, but in other cases I think it is laziness...I know someone who lived in a mess and it was laziness. But this case was different.

When he first chose Commander Whitehead (I love the name!) that is what I thought too...I hope she is not pregnant. But she most likely is.I hope they keep working with Glen and helping him.

And I was really, really glad that they didn't portray rats out to be these evil, disgusting animals.
i saw it last night as well, it was a very helpful rescue did anyone read at the end after the helpers left the guy found about 300 more in his walls and has found them all good homes ?
Wow. At least they all got good homes
I read this additional information from Goosemoose. Lauren, from North Star Rat Rescue said:

Glen has been keeping them at the property next door where there is better temperature control for the rats this winter. Commander Whitehead did have babies, and we picked those up and brought them back to the shelter, and Captain Brownbod I believe may have been too young to be pregnant because she never did have babies.

We are still going to work with Glen to get his rats spayed. He's taking great care of them, although he says Commander in particular is getting huge and fat because he shares his dinner with her. Glen really misses all of his rats, but he's spending the quality time with his two rat girls that he couldn't give to the hoard, and he's adjusting.

He was remarkably cooperative and kept havahart cages and caught an additional 70+ that they picked up along with the Commander's babies on their most recent trip.
Having worked with a hoarder before, I'm impressed by how willing he's been to keep working with the North Star people.

Aw. I'm glad he's doing alright and the ratties are too!
Storyseeker, that is great news, thanks for the update! It came at a perfect time because Marc and I just watched this episode with Glen last night from the link you posted of the video. We were wondering how Glen might be doing currently and also worried that Commander Whitehead was probably pregnant. I am so glad he got to keep a couple of girls to love. I am sure he is spoiling them both with lots of one-on-one attention that he could not give to thousands of rats. A nice update to read. :)
I just watched the episode and I am so glad Story that you got some updates!
I felt so bad for this guy, he is clearly grieving and he really saw what was better for the animals.
I'm glad they let him keep 2 females and that they made sure to take away the babies.
So much work for the rescue... I can't believe that it got this out of hands in just a couple years!! It goes even faster than I thought!
I really do hope this man heals completely, it will be hard to lose those two girls in a couple years if he doesn't get help to really deal with loss.
I'm so glad he's helping the rescue.
Sending him some good vibes to get better.
Agreed Dustette, great post! Glen is a good guy and he loves his babies. Glad that things are looking better so far and that the rest of the rats are getting adopted. Nice.

Also, read your update on Louna, and glad to hear she is being spoiled rotten, hooray! Give her a kiss for me. :D
I will pass on the kiss, right on the belly :)
Excellent! Belly kisses on ratties, what can be better? :D
yep!
She got a lot! I had to give her some from you, breyer, stanley and russell!
and of course, she loved it haha
What a great update!

I just watched the episode again last night with my mom,as she wanted to watch it.I am so glad there is a positive outcome in this situation.
