Hoarders
Just wondering who else saw the episode of "Hoarders" last night with the 1000+ rats? I only saw it today,when a friend shared the link with me.

I didn't see it (no cable) but this is the woman whose rats ended up populating the San Jose Humane Society, right? Poor ratties, and poor lady and her family for succumbing to this awful disease. Hope she got the help she needed...and I hope the rats are getting good families.

No,it is a man.He lived alone with over 1000+ rats.While I normally do not feel bad for these people,I felt bad for this man because it was clear he loved the rats.He just had the situation turn out of control.He started with 3 rats and then it turned into this mess.
The rats were brought to rescues/shelters and last I heard about 500 have been adopted.Many will probably be euthanized if they have not already for illness/injuries or simply because there are way too many.A few were euthanized on the show due to being injured badly.

I just saw this show in the A & E website. You know, as depressing as it is for situations to get like this his whole segment was really hopeful. This is the first time I've ever seen a 'news/documentary' type segment treat rats as anything other than a vile infestation. It was clear through the whole production that the rats were valued, and Glenn was treated with respect and care. The only time it got overtly sensational was when they made a point of filming poor Glenn having to make a decision on putting down some of his injured rats.
Of the episodes I've ever watched, this is also the first person portrayed on Hoarders that wasn't portrayed as some kind of mental lost cause. The poor man was grieving. Horribly. Had he owned a less prolific animal, I don't think it would have ever become a hoarding situation. He seemed ready to start dealing with his loss. He broke my heart. I hope he's healing.
Small note, in that I hope that the female rat he kept, 'Commander Whitehead', wasn't pregnant. And if she wasn't, I hope they ended up allowing him to keep another female down the line. I'm going to follow the rat rescue site a little more closely, and maybe ask to see if they know how he's doing.
This situation is turning into a really positive thing, showing the best of what people are capable.

He got his well for his business fixed and his friends and family are rallying together to keep him on the right track. If he follows through and gets therapy, I think he will recover. I'm holding out a lot of hope for him, he is really trying very hard.

They also said this about the rats being picked up by their tails (which other folks had criticized on other forums):

Yes,I don't watch the show normally,but the episodes I did see made the people out to look bad. I felt bad for Glen and at a few points,I admit was teary eyed. In many of these cases the people have a disorder,but in other cases I think it is laziness...I know someone who lived in a mess and it was laziness. But this case was different.
When he first chose Commander Whitehead (I love the name!) that is what I thought too...I hope she is not pregnant.But she most likely is.I hope they keep working with Glen and helping him.
And I was really,really glad that they didn't portray rats out to be these evil,disgusting animals.
i saw it last night as well, it was a very helpful rescue did anyone read at the end after the helpers left the guy found about 300 more in his walls and has found them all good homes ?

Storyseeker, that is great news, thanks for the update! It came at a perfect time because Marc and I just watched this episode with Glen last night from the link you posted of the video. We were wondering how Glen might be doing currently and also worried that Commander Whitehead was probably pregnant. I am so glad he got to keep a couple of girls to love. I am sure he is spoiling them both with lots of one-on-one attention that he could not give to thousands of rats. A nice update to read.

Agreed Dustette, great post! Glen is a good guy and he loves his babies. Glad that things are looking better so far and that the rest of the rats are getting adopted. Nice.
