I live with a hoarder who's hoarded around 15 cats over the past few years slowly. Now she and I can't keep up and I live in a home that smells strongly of ammonia and keeps me feeling unhealthy and angry.

Are there any good ways to rehome many cats at once? She is no longer overly attached to these cats, so I feel I can't move them without repercussion from her, and she hasn't brought in a new addition in about a year. I think it's safe to begin rebuilding my life, starting with moving these cats somewhere they'll be happier.

are they all healthy, have their shots? spayed and nuetured? Your local humane society will work with you i think.

Yep, every cat is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, etc. They all have great temperaments. I'll try and call our local humane society tomorrow and see what they say. I'm still open to other suggestions, too, in case this doesn't work out.

if your local shelter doesnt, help you could always put an ad online and ask for a small amount of money for the cat or cats that are adopted to insure they go to a great home, as well as have them fill out a forum, that you create so that you can monitor,potential homes.

also, I would highly suggest you talk to your roommate before getting rid of her cats, I know that it must be stressful on you to have so many cats, but if you get rid of them like that without asking , you could make matters worst, and restart the hoarding process all over again and 10 times worst, if shes not willing to get rid of the cats,give her an alternitive say something like which ones are you super attached to let her pick out a few and let her keep those few. if that doesnt work please work with a specialist do not get angry with her, as hoarding is an illness, and can be a very frustrating process, for you and the person, going through this process wont be easy. I am on the fence. I would want to re home them but they are the roommates and it could blow up. I do think it would be best for EVERYONE (including the cats) to have fewer. I would maybe anonymously call in so the roommate couldn't blame you but it is a hard thing to be going through. I wish you lots of luck in handling this. Remember that both the cats and your roommate have feelings and try to be gentle (an obvious statement but I'm making it anyway)

I would sit her down and mutually agree on pet limits that you can have and able to care for properly without risking your healt, roomates, or the animals. She may need thrrapy as well, or to realize why she is getting so many pets.

She doesn't want the cats anymore, they're just here now because she can't find homes. There's a little concern in me about relapse, but I know as of right now I don't want to live like this.

I care very much for the cats and for my 'roommate,' but I'm beginning to realize I can't be here forever in this situation. My boyfriend lives here as well and it isn't fair to him or myself to stay here and babysit this person.

If I didn't care for the kitties the solution would be simple ): Pound. But I can't stand the thought. She's already sent 2 to the pound, and I feel guilty enough for not intervening on that one. But I feel since I don't have a better solution, I didn't have the right to tell her no.


My issue isn't the 'roommate' stopping me or anything; my issue is finding new homes. I have no idea how to rehome critters. A PetFinder ad did nothing to help me.

I agree with asking shelters. Petfinder ads do stay up for a long while but some shelters will run courtesy posts for you on petfinder, petharbor, and sometimes on their own website.

You cant save them all. Animals are put down, its unfair. But in these conditions theyll get sicker and no one will want them.
