I know quite a bit about recommendations for gerbil housing size, but from people who have experience with raising gerbils and different tank sizes, how many gerbils would you recommend for:

a) a 35 US Gallon tank -- 15 x 35 x 15 inches
b) a 70 US Gallon tank -- 30 x 35 x 15 inches

Please, looking for answers from those with gerbil experience only :)

Usually it's ten gallons for the first gerbil and an extra 5 gallons for each additional gerbil.

One thing to keep in mind though, female gerbils should only be kept in pairs, regardless of tank size. Females are dominant in gerbil society and are prone to fighting if there are too many in one space. Males can be kept in trios, but any more than three and you're asking for fighting to happen.

Also, if your tank is too big, there is the possibility of declanning. I'm a breeder and have several pairs of gerbils. I only keep them in pairs, with the exception of when they have babies, and I keep my pairs in 10-15 gallon aquariums. I have never had a problem with any of them fighting or declanning.
