We all love our pets, but I was wandering how much people really are willing to sacrifice if it comes to the choice: their pet or their hard earned money. Assuming the treatment was non-toxic (so not chemo or radiation) and the treatment caused no harm to the pet, you didn’t have pet insurance and that using the treatment would most likely prolong the life of your pet?
$700? $1,000? , $1,500?, $3,000+?
I am interested in how much we spend (or are willing to spend)? I would like to know dollars and cents.

This is in response to a WSJ article done over the summer where they tried to figure out the value of a dog. This article fascinated me and I wanted to know if I could prove the value of the dog with the response from forums and blogs.

I really appreciate your time.

well it depends on other factors...

such as is it going to cause my pet more pain than it is worth, and if it actually cures them.

I wouldn't want to cause my pet pain by trying to make them live longer, if they would have a poor life after than i would put them to sleep i guess. Its hard to say with out having the situation happening...

If i could i would give everything i could to make my pet happy and healthy and if at all possible i would spend what i had to do so.

That would depend on a lot of things. If it were a large animal like a horse, that would be different from a small animal like a gecko or a tarantula.

Age would also be a factor. I have a 17 year old Golden that is very near the end of her life. I would not spend thousands of dollars to extend it another few months, when that is all she may have. A puppy might be different.

There is also the factor of how much the animal means to you. Many of us have favorite animals, ones that are very, very important to us, ...and sometimes we end up (though odd circumstances) with animals that just don't 'click'. I would find it much easier to spend a great deal of money on an animal I really cared for than on one I don't.

That's just me, YMMV...

It depends on if it would actually help. If it would, like curing my baby, then I would spend whatever it takes.

Depends on factors like some have mentioned, but assuming it'd be a dog (for me) not at the end of life, that you loved, wouldn't cause more pain, and while not guaranteed would have a good chance, ect, ect.

Then.....

Having dealt with cancer before I'd say whatever it cost within reason.

That means I'm not going to over pay or pay some outrageous amount, this honestly goes for anything. I've heard people paying $1000-4000 just to treat parvo which is a very inexpensive disease to treat. I would treat it but not for that price, would still treat it but wouldn't be getting ripped off.

Without chemo or radiation I'd probably pay somewhere around $1000-1500 to treat cancer. Whatever goes along with that initial visit, medication, supplements, surgery, ect. I wouldn't pay $3000 or more if there isn't any chemo/radiation.

Also I don't feel it is a sacrifice. To pay for medical treatment for your dog.

as said above it all depends, but if it were terminal and the pet was in pain I would do the right thing, but if it was curable and the pet could live a quality life I would do anything I had to do...

Many know what I went through with my cat Mama before she passed away...we spent well over two thousand on her making sure she could continue with her life, we felt as long as that spark was in her eyes and she was fighting herself we would do whatever it took to help her, but when the time came that she was in pain and the fight had left her we did what had to be done...

There are some people who can't afford to go to great lengths, then there are the families who will do whatever they can to go to that length, the whole thing depends on just way to many factors to ever get an accurate answer...my pets are part of our family so going the distance is the way we would choose to go...good luck on getting a solid answer

i dont have dogs so it may be different but i thinnk the vet care for not common pets is very poor i dont trust it and if it goed wrong the pet would have alot of pain and keeping a pet alive in pain imo is selfish somtimes it is just time to let go. but if the pet is young and helthy and i truusted the medical aktion i would spend alot of money, prbably all but what i have need to live normal and kepp my other pets and such.
