Jezzy in Jail

2117 Views 13 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Kendalle
Jezzy has to go in jail at night. She just won't stop attacking the ghosts under the sheets. But boy the girl has lungs! Was hard to fall asleep but she'll get used to it. Or learn to stop attacking feet....
Sorry it's so dark but it's as bright as I could make it.

How is she going to learn to stop attacking your feet if she is locked in a cage all night? :(

Cats need to run and play.

Play with her for an hour or so before you go to bed, wear her out. Then she will not want to play with your feet under the sheets. Keep a spray bottle next to the bed. When she goes for the feet, squirt her. (avoiding face) She will learn that that is not such a fun game after all.

Caging her up will teach her nothing. What it will do is make her so crazy to run she will be getting into mischief all day.
You must have misunderstood. I lock her in there when nothing else works. I know that cats need to run and play. I have worn her out at night before we go to bed then at 2 in the morning when i feel a sharp claw in my toe and move it she's usually gone and I just don't want to trip over everything searching and shooting water around electircal stuff so I don't. I am doing it the best I can and I just wanted to share a picture. I have had a cat all my life and have raised them from kittens on three accounts. Next time I won't try to make a joke. Sorry if I sound short but I now understand why this forum is going under.

I don't think I misunderstood. It's quite clear what you said, that you are putting her in the crate at night because she goes after your feet. But how will she ever learn to not go after your feet, if she is kept locked up every night? What else have you tried?

Forums don't "go under" because members have differing opinions or opposing points of view. You can't expect everyone to agree on everything. To thrive and grow, a board needs active members who post regularly in a variety of places, not just in chat or in their own threads.

I don't think it will damage a cat to be put in a crate at night. People do it with their dogs all the time Keeps you safe and them safe when you can't watch them at night.

If it works then do it. In my experience squirting water at cats does nothing but anger them. Our cat lucy will just take the punishment. He knows its coming and will do it anyway. He knows right from wrong and he will do the wrong thing if he wants to do it.

I haven't met a cat yet that will really learn not to do something they want to do. like sit on the table. after 13 years of yelling, squirting, chasing, time outs. Lucy is now allowed on the kitchen table.
Cats are not dogs :)

One of the reasons it's difficult to train a cat to stay off a table or counter is because, since you aren't there to keep him of 24 hours a day, the training isn't consistent.

Training a cat to leave your feet alone while you are in bed is not as difficult. :) Of course since this is a kitten, time will most likely take care of the problem. But the kitten will not learn anything, if she is kept crated every night. What she might do is start to go crazy being cooped up and get into trouble during the day.

Shutting the bedroom door would be a better way, then she at least would have the run of the rest of the home. It still would not allow her access to her people though, which is one of the things that bothers me about the crating. If she is alone during the day when her people go to work and then kept shut up in a crate at night, she is alone way too much. She needs to be with her people. If someone is home with her all day, it is not that disturbing to me to think of the bedroom door being shut to keep her out at night. But again, she will never learn, if she isn't taught.

Cats don't get "angry" in the way you describe. Squirt training can be very effective if used properly and for the right things. A cat who doesn't like to be squirted will learn quickly that playing with the blanket mice will get her squirted and she will stop doing it.

Another option would be to keep the vacuum cleaner at the foot of the bed, turned on but not plugged in. When she goes after the feet plug the vacuum in to make it burst into life. Kitten will learn that playing with feet makes this scary machine go on.

Another option would be, when she starts the game at two a.m., that's when you shut her out of the room. Rather than just crating her at bed time. She will soon make the connection and find other ways to entertain herself in the middle of the night.

yes all these methods take work. It does take work and a little sacrifice to raise a kitten. Just locking a kitten up to keep her from doing something that bothers you will not teach her anything. :)

I was upset because I have noticed that people attack others since they feel the person asking for advice (or making a joke) has no idea and they know best.

If I shut the bedroom door, which I do at night, then how can she not attack my feet if I am in the same room with her and I don't let her out in the rest of the house since there are other people? The squirt bottle doesn't work because like it was stated, it just makes her mad. I have found some toys for her and that keeps her pretty busy.

She does NOT stay cooped up at night. I am restating that again. She goes in when she attacks the feet until she calms down and then is let out. I am remembering also she was a barn cat kitten so I am respecting that and not expecting her to be as a house cat kitten would have been.

I cannot lock her out of the room since other people live in this house. I am teaching her and just wanted to share something funny. Last night she didn't attack my feet at all so if I'm teaching her wrongly, at least it's still working.

Again for the record, she does NOT get locked up ALL night. It's for a short period of time so she knows that attacking feet will get her ignored.

i agree with kendalle its no worst then when people crate train there dogs.
I agree. As long as the cat doesn't stay in a kennel more than they're out it's no biggie. And each cat is different so you have to take that into consideration. You can't train any animal "by the book" for the main fact that they don't read the book. They're like teaching a baby. There are basics, but they all have to be tweaked depending on the personality.
I meant also that new people don't like to come in and say something and be attacked by others who just say how horrible they are doing it. Only they know how their pet is
Cats are not dogs and have very different needs than dogs. :)

Christine, my post was not an attack. My post contained my opinion and an alternative way to handle your issue.

That is not an attack, it is an attempt to have a discussion. It is the way forums work. If members take offense every time someone disagrees with them, yes, a forum will have very little future.

I stand by my opinion that a kitten should not be kept crated over night, every night. She will never learn how you want her to behave if you don't teach her what is expected of her. Using the crate as a training tool, by putting her in it ONLY if she attacks your feet in the middle of the night will teach her that the foot attacks will not be tolerated.
I understand. I have had both dogs and cats since I was born. It's an opinion yes but honestly the words "I think" or "I've always tried" instead of acting like I'm doing it all wrong and you know best because you don't know my cat or others animals so what works, works. And amazingly Jezzy has stopped attacking feet and is behaving great and using the toys more. All becasue of my crate training. I have NEVER locked her in over night so you can think that all you want but don't act like I have when I KNOW for a FACT how I treat my cat. She is spoiled beyond belief and next time you give an opinion you might want to say that instead of just saying how wrong the other people are. Just saying. That's MY opinion is that you are too harsh in saying others are just wrong.

Hmm. I didn't see this part of your posts before, my mistake and I apologize for missing it. I'm glad you aren't locking her up all night, and that you have been training exactly in the way I was saying would work, so all along we were saying the same thing. :)

However your hostility is misplaced and it is argumentative posts like this(below) that drive people away.

When you tell someone they're doing it wrong and don't understand how they're doing it fully but they must be wrong would upset most people I know. I don't chase people away and I try to tell them my opinion or understand better before I jsut tell them completely that they're wrong. You can't blame me for this forum going under. But if you really feel that' its mostly cause of me or people who don't like to be told how stupid they are then I can't stop you.
I think this topic just needs to be let go.
