Hi everyone,
I'm new here and new to degus as well. My family and I aquired two young males (brothers) about 11 days ago. I have been reading as much as I can online especially about nutrition...there are some inconsistencies with the exception of sugar. Everyone seems to agree that they should not have an sugar in their diet. Some sites suggest raw veggies, some say they only need hay and pellets. Is alfalfa hay ok or is timothy better?
I'm interested in trying a product called JR Farm Degu Premium. Is it only available in the UK or can we get it here in the US?
I also would like to hear everyones opinion on feeding fresh wheat grass to degus. I read on a website that its good for them or is this a marketing exploit? I know that wheat grass is very healthy for people, my husband and I drink it on occasion but is there much research about whether or not its ok for degus. I wish I could go to chile to witness myself what the wild degus eat!! but thats not going to happen anytime soon-lol.
I would really appreciate some advice on nutrition. The breeder I purchased my boys from feeds her breeders a mix of guinea pig and chin pellets along with sunseed degu diet. The ingredients on the degu pellet looks fine (no molasses or sugar) but the other two items she sold me have molasses in it. I did not check the labels until I got home unfortunately. She also feeds a mix of
"uncooked macaroni, whole oats(not sugared), peanuts, rice, pinto beans(uncooked), whole unpopped and popped popcorn, dried fruit, unsugared corn flakes, cherrios and any other type of nuts".
Is this ok? I have been giving them small amounts of uncooked whole wheat pasta and uncooked beans but some websites have said no nuts or sunflower seeds. I haven't been giving any dried fruit like she suggested either, occasionally a tidbit of fresh apple.
Can they have raw oatmeal ,or maybe oat groats? or is that a no no too...
I know I have asked a lot of questions in one post, hope that is ok...Thank you in advance for any replies!
Michelle
