Kidney- and tummy-friendly cat food

Hi all...sorry if this is kinda long.

Anyone out there have a kitty with kidney AND stomach problems? What food do you feed them? My girls are 16-months old. I had them on Nutro Natural Choice kitten food, which they loved. One of my cats started vomiting at about 7 months of age...she was REALLY sick for about a week and had to be hospitalized to get fluids, etc. They never figured out why, and she seems fine now. However, when they were running tests to figure out the vomiting they did an ultrasound and noted that she has abnormal (lumpy) kidneys. When it came time to switch them to big girl food, I bought the Natural Choice adult food. It caused Sprout to vomit, even with a very gradual changeover. The vet said that we needed to get her off of the kitten food because of the high protein. Sprout's kidneys are working fine now, but because they are abnormal I guess it makes sense she'd be at risk for kidney problems later, so we'd want a kidney friendly food. The vet sells Hills, so they gave us the Hills Sensitive Stomach. It hasn't caused any vomiting, but the protein content in it doesn't seem that much lower than the Nutro (31% vs 34%) and she doesn't seem to like it quite as much as the Nutro. I also know that there are some folks who aren't big fans of Hills. I want to give my girls the best that I can. The vet said that there was no need to put her on prescription kidney diet (24% protein) at this time. Is there anything else to be cautious of besides protein conent? I'd imagine sodium would be bad...but shouldn't all cat food be low in sodium?? I thought about switching to the Natural Balance single protein source/carb source foods because maybe the vomiting was from some particular food ingredient Sprout can't handle. The protein in that food is 32%; I can't tell how much sodium/phosphorus/etc.

I have been pretty lucky with my cats. Although they throw up it never seems excessive. I do have my guys on a sensitive stomach food but that is b/c my Tyler has almost no teeth and since they are on the crunchy food I thought the sensitive stomach version may be easier for him to digest. Now back to the point. What about mixing two foods together? This way they are not getting as much protein. Good luck!
I've seen several favorable posts about chicken soup for the cat lover's soul, so I decided to check it out. It has 30% protein, so that's even better than the Science Diet Sensitive Stomach. It's caused no stomach problems, and the kitties seem to like it.

This forum has provided some really great information!
I use both the Cat Lover's for the Cat lover's Soul and the kitten formula. My vet highly recommends this even over Science Diet. #1 no byproducts, the first primary ingredients are real meat and also no corn products. I have a 5y/o, a 18 week old, and an 8 week old. They all seem to LOVE it. In fact there is battles with the older cat wanting the kitten food over her portions of adult food lol. Then the kittens want her big kitty food so the continous watching of who's in who's food goes on lol. At first I was mixing the Science Diet with the Chicken soup and noted that they all 3 would pick out the Chicken Soup kibble and leave the Science Diet kibble in the bowl which went to waste. I have them completely switched over now. My oldest has sensitive stomach and would throwup frequently even with Science Diet. Since the switch - no more vomiting at all. Not only that you get much larger bags for much less $$!!!
