I noticed this morning that my male rat Finn was peeing blood (I think).

For the past few weeks, he's been having trouble breathing and was losing weight. I took him to the vet a few days ago and he was diagnosed with having parasites which also caused pneumonia. I have two types of medicine, one for the pneumonia, and the other to get rid of the parasites. He's been on the parasite medicine for 3 days now. Is it possible that the parasites are causing blood? Finn is acting fairly normal (somewhat lazy, but he's been like that because of the pneumonia). I noticed this morning his hammock (which he pees in cause he isn't that smart) was way dirtier than yesterday. Then when I took him out and put him on top of his cage to give him the pneumonia medicine, he peed a little and it was red. I used a paper towel to clean it up, and it was just red fluid, no yellow urine with red spotting or any mix.

I would take him to the only animal hospital near me, but their rat specialist is only there on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

I haven't been able to find anything helpful on the internet that relates to my problem, so I thought I'd post for myself.

Hi,
I am sorry about Finn. :(
It sounds like you are doing all you can for him and unless someone with a lot of knowledge on this posts something on the forum, I guess you will have to wait until your vet opens up again to ask them about the red colored urine. Did the vet mention anything about the meds, like they could possibly turn his urine a different color? It could be possible that it is not blood at all, which I hope is true. I wish I had experience with this! :(
Hang in there, Finn! Let us know how it goes?

Bloody urine or peeing blood can be caused by tumors internally,kidney/lung infections and other infections in the bladder or such.

Get him back to the vet ASAP and tell them about it. If possible bring in something he has peed on to show your vet.

A friend of mine recently had a female rat peeing blood and it turned out she had a tumor on her uterus.
