Hello,
I recently bought two Degus home from work (pet store), they recognised me everyday and I just fell in love! They are two brothers and about 15 weeks.
I have only had them a few days but they are so friendly... and hilarious!
Everytime I open the cage door, they leap at me! I don't even have time to really put my hand out, they both just want to come out and try climbing all over me! It is sweet but I am worried they will jump off me and run around the house - which would be great although I am super worried I won't ever get them back!
So at the moment I only allow them on my hands. I worry that even if they climb up my arms or shoulders they will leap of and run away but they are desperate too explore and I want them too.

If I trust them to climb on me, are they likely to leap of? Do they immediatly scamper when they are out of the cage? Will I get them back?!

I want playtime with them!

Thank you in advance for any advice :)

you could always create an area where they can play and explore :)

Agree with nibbler. I have an old baby pin, a huge like 12 foot area, my goos can run around in until they get more tamed and trust me. My older degus who have now passed all were let out of the cage. If you have an area for them they start to trust you because they know you will let them out!!!

Enjoy :)

Set up a pen or degu-proof a small room like a bathroom :). Once they've shown you that they'll go back to their cage (or will come when called, or are easy to scoop up, etc.), give them more freedom.

I've had a few degus (the ones who bonded closest to me) who ended up getting free-range of my room because I knew they'd always go back to the cage at night to sleep. But I've had others that had to be let out in small areas for supervised play.
