I know I only lurk mostly these days. I've been exhausted, overworked, and kind of forum-ed out of late. I apologize. But I wanted to share some news and updates.

First of all, an update on my current Ghost Girls.

Aggie: Has been struggling with a neck abscess. There is a suspicion that it might be hiding some underlying cancer. We are continuing to treat her symptomatically. At 15 mos, my tilty headed flower is still all kinds of perky and spunky. As long as she is loving life, we'll let her wiggle on. :)

Darcy: Has been doing just fine. She's coming up on 2 years old and is just as sweet and arm drapingly loving as she always has been. She helps my boys with their homework every day after school.

Devon: She is 5 months shy of her 3rd birthday. The longest lived rat I've had so far. She still runs (walks) on her wheel, and has become quite the lazy love bug. She falls asleep often in our arms and is enjoying her old lady days.

And in new news?

We're adopting 3 new rats this month. Georgia Rat Rescue had some rescues that melted my heart this week and I have to bring them home. Lilspaz, I thought of you when I found out about my two new boys (yay, ghost BOYS back in da house!).

They're about 3 and 4 months old. One is a mink boy currently called Haskall D. Cuddles, the other is a PEW boy, currently called Data. Their names will change when I meet them and figure out what they aught to be called. They started life in a feeder bin. Some really excellent young men from Georgia University decided to buy them and let them loose in a girls' dorm as a prank. Retrieved from this nightmare, the young men got together with their friends and drew lots to determine who got to decide the rat boys' fate. Possibilities included stomping on them, experimenting on them, drowning them, feeding them to animals, setting them loose in the wild, making them fight to the death. Ugh.

Fortunately, one gorgeous student read them the riot act for being barbaric mouthbreathers and took the two rats from them. He didn't have a place to keep them, so he brought them to a friend off campus to stay. The off campus friend had no clue what to do, but did his best and made a big rat tunnel maze out of tupperware boxes for the boys to live in and fed them scraps from the cafeteria.

Eventually they found the Georgia Rat Rescue and gladly surrendered them to my friend PhoenixGate. This poor pair has been fostered, loved, and fed properly for the last month and are very sweet, shy, loving boys.

My other girl is an extremely petite young adult girl who is currently full of beans with hormonal attitude and cheeky sweetness. She's a black hood with a cute belly spot who goes by the name Princess Buttercup, because she's a /serious/ Princess. She came from a rescue oops litter. We've already decided to call her Clara the Impossible Girl for her moxy. She'll be spayed this week, and will come home with the boys in two weeks.

Hello Storyseeker!

Story!

So nice to hear from you! The forum has been very dead lately and I am guilty as well for not being around much myself either. I pop in to see if there are any new posts, but it has been quiet here lately.

I loved seeing your update on the girls and the big news about your new kiddos that are on the way! Super! Ghost Boys back in da house indeed!

I was so disheartened reading about the a-hole college boys and their treatment of your soon-to-be new arrivals. Human cruelty and thoughtlessnes rises again. Why do humans have to be such an ugly species? :(

It makes me so depressed because the irony is that rats get so much disrespect from people and rats are one of the most loving and sweet critters on the planet. It breaks my heart to read about mistreatment of them.

Marc was just furious when I read him your post about those college boys and their proposed plans for what to "do" with the rats.

But then Marc also told me to focus on the GOOD PEOPLE, like the boy who took the rats away from the idiots and his off campus friend who tried his best to care for them. So, I guess I need to focus on the good, not the bad.

I am so looking forward to photos and more posts when you get your boys and your new girl. Advanced hellos to them all when they arrive! I could not be more thrilled! Keep us updated okay? Hugs to you and your girls!

Hey honey!

Yah, we stay so busy don't we?

As for the college boys, proof that all any of us need to be on the side of good or evil is the right circumstances and leverage. I find myself wondering how each of them would react in a less 'mob' centered environment. Or if the animals in question were ones they knew more about like, say, puppies.

It does take great courage to go against the group. I'm immensely proud of the young man who did it. And all it takes is one voice. Mr. Fred Rogers, the most awesome man I've ever known of was once quoted: When I was a boy and I would see scary things on the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially in times of “disaster,” I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world."

Right said Fred. :D

I do have some links with pictures and stories of the new kids if you're interested...

Story, you are so right on the money. Yes, different circumstances could always change the actions.

A single person vs. a mob or a more "known" animal like a puppy or kitten...exactly. And I am very proud of that one man going against the group. Fred was right (and mom) that there are always helpers. What a great thing to remember! I will keep that in mind next time something makes me sad.

(I started volunteering for an animal rescue called Farm Sanctuary, so now I can tell myself I am a helper in my own small way. :) )

I cannot wait to see your links you posted of your new kids, yay! I will read them right now. :confetti:

SO nice to see you on the forum, Story. Really and for true, as the little kids say. :dream:

Well, you've been a 'helper' inspiration to me for years now. :) You're a starfish helper. :D http://epistle.us/inspiration/starfish.html

I don't volunteer for an animal rescue, but I work as a starfish helper for kids. And of course the occasional ratty.

Even though this forum isn't active, and I don't visit every day, it's still is a favorite of mine, and I think fondly of everyone on it.

I'll keep you updated on the new kids.

Keep me updated on Achilles and Max too!

Ahhh, just read the bios on your boys and little Buttercup (soon to be Clara) and as always, they are just dolls! What ratty isn't beautiful, eh? :)

Clara's sisters were just adorable as well...heart thuds! You must be so excited for your new bubs! Hooray for the Georgia Rat Rescue!

Keep us posted on your new arrivals Story! I cannot wait for pictures of course! :sneakyhug

Aww, I read your Starfish helper story and it was wonderful! I have read that before and I always loved it. :) Thanks Story!

You are already a rescuer of bubs so you don't need to volunteer...in my opinion, with all the rescue ratties you take in, you are already doing 400 percent more than I can on a daily basis. You are a MEGA starfish helper! :D And an inspiration to me.

Marc and I live in a minimal amount of space and with minimal funds so two kiddos at a time is about all we can handle in order to make sure we can have funds for vet visits and adequate space for two ratties. So, there you go. So we are small scale here.

I will definitely post some newer photos soon of Achilles and Maximus, which I have not done in awhile. I will post a new thread for it and let you know. They are lazy, happy and spoiled boys and the apples of our eye, as always. We are ratty slaves for sure. Hee hee! :crylaugh:
