Has anyone watched this documentary? Opinions??
I watched it the other night and while MOST of it wasn't news to me,it was a little disturbing.

It can be found on YouTube. It is 6 parts and each one is 10 mins long.I can post the links here if anyone wants. However there are some disturbing scenes in them,so watch it at your own risk.

However not ALL breeders or show people are like that.
And they should of at least mentioned that.I used to know a woman who had a great dane and a doberman that she showed (she was a friend of a friend - but I often talked to her) and she didn't see her dogs are just show items. They got the best of care and I think she may of done a little bit of breeding too,but not excessively.

Arrrggggg....thats just mean and cruel.Esp. the dogs who was on the ground crying.

I personally don;t think dogs should be shown its not like the dog cares whether or not its a champion showing is all for the owner.

I think if we're going to show dogs we should be showing them the way their supposed to look not bred to look they way we think they should if they makes sense.

I'll be back after I finish watching everything.
Yeah.

However thats another thing...showing/breeding are supposed to be for bettering the breed or keeping the standards right.Hence why mixes are not shown, because they have no standard.

But if you look at bulldogs and pugs (for example) many yrs ago, they do not look the way they do now.

:no2:
Yeah.

Exactly. The show ring is supposed to show the proper example of the dog. A healthy and well build dog.

But as one of the judges said in the first part of the documentary. The GSD you see in the ring is the proper example of a GSD even though it was various problems esp.with walking, where as the working GSD is build to work,is healthy, and walks normally. To me this should be the proper example of the GSD.Not so weird walking dog that to me looks like some of them could to in pain or uncomtferable(sp) walking like that.

At least some owners are doing all they can to help their pets and not just throwing them on the streets.
Yeah, the GSD was walking weird and I hardly see that as a good example.I am no judge, but when I see a GSD out somewhere,I do noticed if it looks good or not.

And dogs with problems like that are just going to have more issues later on...hip dysplasia,arthritis...etc! :(
OK as I watch on into this it is seriously ticking me off even more.

Ridge back Dogs
The ridge is actually a spinal deformity which can lead to other serious health problems in the future.
Should a puppy be born without this deformity cull them. Now thats just stupid. And there is a crazy lady in the videos saying ' oh well these new young vets aren't going to put these puppies to sleep because its not right to put healthy puppies to sleep so we go to the old vets' ummm...HELLO stupid lady it is wrong to put down perfectly healthy and happy puppies because they don't meet the stupid requirements.AND in the KENNEL CLUB book it says cull them. Stupid losers.

I'm still watching so I'm not done yet
I know! And the one that said "it's not a ridgeback if it has no ridge"...thats BS.If a ridgeback and a ridgeback have puppies and one is born without a ridge,it is STILL a ridgeback!

Culling was done alot in the old days.
These days you can still cull by spaying or neutering and NOT killing.
However in a dog forum I am in,there is a huge debate on culling and sadly alot of people agree with the killing part of culling.I think it is wrong to kill/euthanise healthy puppies! Like I said, spaying and neutering is a form of culling, and a much better choice if your gonna do it at all.
I wanted to add...keep it civil.

I have seen the debate about this documentary go really, really bad in another forum I am in.
Yeah.

Things like this just make you want to have all the breeders, kennel club people etc sit down and have them be yelled at through bullhorns in their face if thats the only way to get the REAL facts through their thick FRICKEN sculls and their little tiny peanut sized brains.

You know what van_rat? We should start our own club
:)
OOPS what???

When I mean keep it civil,I meant via other members here.
Cause if it is anything like the other forums, you will have 50/50 on opinions and sometimes people don't respect someone else's opinion if it different then their own.And fights break out.Thats what I mean. But as of now,it is just you and I!

I thought you were talking to me about my comments such as stick a bullhorn in their face and yell at them. :hehe:

But yes PEOPLE KEEP IT CIVIL OR ELSE

Hahaha...nope.
I didn't mean that.I would do the same! Hahahaha!
Except it prolly wouldn't get through their close minded, thick skulls.

Gosh!!!!I'll be in town till ____________ thank you ladies(i.e. van_rat) and gentle men(umm....).
I dont know how old this post is. I have not been on in forever. I didnt watch it, i just wanted to add that my dog came from a show breeder. He is so line bred (inbred!) that he has all sorts of issues and has to be on medication for the rest of his life. Also he is very odd looking!

We love him anyway... just wanted to point out.... even if your sheltie is from someone who shows a lot and has lots of champions does not mean you are getting a healthy dog.
Over here it is normal to cull as far as I understand.
It is also normal to have a "trial" litter, and then cull the litter.
Some people are just sick.
Like people who breed sich dogs, just because they look good - that is SO wrong :( Or inbreeding or "line breeding" as they like to call it...
This thread is actually fairy new, only started on Thursday.

We got Kibbles from a pet store (I know bad,but it was a nice pet store and the lady was really nice and we got his papers anyways...) who got Kibbles from a breeder but they didn't have show dogs as I understand and Kibbles is fairly healthy same with Kiwi who we got from a BYB (I know bad again) but mutts are far healthier than 'purbred' dogs.
Actually mutts can be unhealthy too.
For example,my neighbours dogs are both mutts and ill.The male seizures.

Also I hear all the time that mutts are getting sick.
I don't apply that mixed breeds are healthier as a rule.It depends on the dogs really...:)
