Cockroaches have completely overrun this dump we call home, today I had to throw out about 20lbs of dog food as well as a ton of people food and run out and buy more dog food and rubbermaid containers to keep everyone's food in untill this problem is solved  But, that's a who 'nother rant!

Today, after emptying my entire kitchen I finally put down some roach killing gel that I've had since we moved. I'd never put it down so far because I was afraid the dogs might get sick from eating the poisoned bugs, but everyone convinced me it would be fine. So, I started out by squirting a line of it along the baseboard where they all ran when I rousted the nasty little things (a covered area when the kitchen is in it's normal state). I went to get the mop to take advantage of the clear floors and come back in the kitchen to see Scrappy running out like she knew she was doing something bad and at first I thought nothing of it since there was nothing left in the kitchen for her to get into. Then I realized that she had been in the corner where I had put out the poison and sure enough when I looked it was all gone!

I immediatly started freaking out, called the number on the box and got some stupid automated service where the closest option to what I wanted was "If this is a medical emergency call..." So I grab the phone book and call the vet, closed. I just went down the page calling vets and got 3 more we're closed messages. By this time I'm really freaking, so I go back to the number on the box and choose the option for a medical emergency. The lady that answers asked for the number on the box to identify the poison and I'm sitting there listening to her type, trying not to scream at her to hurry up and she comes back and says "That's not poisonous to people or dogs!!!! WHEW!!! I could have cried again I was so relieved!!! She told me to just make sure she had water, so I gave her some ice cubes to eat (she loves that) and she's been fine.

I was so mad and so scared! I couldn't believe that in under a minute she woke up from a sound sleep, checked out a completely empty room, found poison and ate it! I also couldn't believe it didn't occur to me to cover it up... I know how she finds trouble to get into! Geeze, if anything bad had happened I never would have forgiven myself!

Moral of the story...Never under estimate the troublemaking abilities of Scrappy!

OMG - I can so relate to what you put up with with her ... when I lived in a trailer court next to some really gross people, their bugs came my way when they tore out their kitchen cupboards. I got those Combat thingies - Dutchy ate 6 of em. Turns out the vet was more concerned that he had eaten plastic ...
You know - those Combat thingies really worked - I got normal ones, and a pack with the egg stopper thingies - and when I moved about 6 months later, I didn't bring any with me ! You'll just have to put them where Scrappy can't get to em (good luck there, I know)

Becki we went through the same thing here not too long ago, our neighbors had roaches really bad and when they exterminated they came into my house and the neighbors on the other side, we called an exterminator, who came out and said that he would use animal friendly stuff he put down a bait (something like you used ) and little combat looking things. He made sure that he put it in cabinets and out of the reach of the dogs and cats (chinnies too) we havent had a problem with the animals getting into it. He never put anything on the baseboards or out in the open. (I thought maybe this would help you some with places to put it.)

I am glad to hear that Scrappy is alright and did not have to see the vet.

No problem. I give it out so often at work I've memorized it. (That and the local wildlife rehab group!)
If it is toxic they'll charge your credit card but what happens is they gather all the information on what it is, what problems it causes, how to react right then and there, and how to treat it long term through a veterinarian who's dealt with this particular poison. Then when you go to your vet, your vet can talk with the vet working on your case (they give you a case number) and appropriately treat your pet. (If the vet calls it's $20 more so the client may as well initially call!)

Im so glad Scrappy is ok. I can also relate. About 3 wks ago, we come home from running errands at 9 pm, Kahlua is the only dog allowed out while we are gone, although we had decided to crate him in the bathroom, b/c he keeps getting into stuff, but we had yet to go out and buy the gate. Well, we get home and there is a roach trap all chewed up! I started freaking out, Brad starts examining it and researching on the internet. Yes exactly what SharonM said, the things he read were "more concerned that the dog injested the plastic" I was ready to rush of to the emergency vet, but called my mom who called her friend with 7 dogs. She said her dog go into some before, they rushed off and all the er vet said was "keep him quiet, get him to drink alot and he'll sleep it off" and their dog was just fine. Her vet also suggested acidopholis(sp) or activated charcol to calm his tummy just in case. And it was this one almost behind the fridge and since dachshunds are so small, he squeezed in and got it. We made sure all others were unaccesible and now for his own safety, he is baby gated in the bathroom while we are out! He would tear through garbage and everything, very destructive for 8 lbs lol.
Im glad Scrappy is OK!:)

Wow, I didn't realize so many people had similar experiances! I freaking HATE cockroaches! The other half of our duplex has 8 people living in it (and it's smaller than ours) and it's just nasty. I've tried the motel thingies about a month or 2 ago, and there's more now then there was then! UGH! Anyway, happy ending to the story, Scrappy once again lived through her mischeviousness

Thanks for that number btw Jade!

I can soooo relate to the scare of poison. When I was 10, my mom bought me a doxie for my birthday. A month later we had moved. The place we moved to did not have a washer and dryer, so mom would take the laundry to the laudromat. We had only had Maxie for about 2 months. Mom took him to the laundromat with her...he licked up rat poison...He died in her arms on the way to the vet. I was devistated. I slept with his collar for a lonnnnnggggg time. I am now 40, and still get very weepy when I think about it. I am soooooo very cautious now with everything. Just as I had to baby proof the house when the kids were little...I baby proof for the fur babies...
Glad everything turned out to be okay for you. What a disaster it could have been.
I am thankful that we don't have cockroaches in BC!!!
