Question about sheet metal...

Just wondering: When using sheet metal to make a cage, what do you do to the edges of the metal so it isn't too sharp for the rats? It seems like just regular-edged sheet metal is really too dangerous to allow them to come into contact with.

Make the edges inaccessible. The edges should occur at the corners of the cage or otherwise in a manner not compatible with injury, like horizontally overlapping so that they can't get a grip on it. Otherwise, the edges should meet on a frame, with the frame being internal and the joints of the walls external.
