Really large bellied dwarf Congo frog

2595 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Toirtis
In September my boyfriend bought two dwarf Congo frogs together. They were both the same size but after putting them in the same tank together, within a month one had got a really large belly.. After this, my boyfriend decided he no longer wanted them (the plan wad to give them to me anyway after I got a tank) The other one hasnt got this problem. They're both the same size, there's just a difference in the belly. There's been this problem but recently he/she is looking rather uncomfortable and I'm sick with worry about what could have happened :( I don't know if this helps or anything but they're both In with my 8 adult guppies, 6 guppy fry, 4 zebra danio, 2 leopard danio, 4 neon tetra and 2 dwarf sucker fish in a 57 litre tank (wont be keeping all the fry by the way) there is no conflict between any of my fish and frogs (the tetra are fascinated with the frogs) also, they're fed frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp every 2 days which goes pretty quick. Every fish and frog gave fine appetites (bar the fish that's just given birth) thanks, will attach pics soon

Common names can be a bit deceiving, but I am assuming that your 'dwarf Congo frogs' are Hymenochirus sp. Now although these frogs can get bloated for a number of reasons, including certain diet and bacterial infections, I would wonder if you may have originally had more guppy fry than just six, and the larger frog helped thin them down during the night when the fry would have been likely resting near or on the bottom.

Incidentally, that is a rather smallish aquarium for that bioload....what sort of filtration and media are you using, and how often do you do water changes and what percentage do you do?
He was large before the fry were born.

I did my research before putting my fish on my tank and have spent hundreds of pounds perfecting it with filters etc.. I did not ask about my fish but I can assure you my tank is fine. Thanks for showing concern.

Apparently, you are not interested in help...I was not inquiring about your fish. You may wish to realise that not only do I have 4 decades of fish experience, but I have a degree in herpetology, and 35 years experience keeping Hymenochirus sp....I ask what I ask for a good reason.
