I have 2 young female gerbils. I'm pretty sure they're related and siblings but not positive on that note. One is slightly smaller than the other. They were getting along fine, grooming and sleeping together. Then one day they suddenly decided they hate each other. The black one started he fight and hey both got a few bad scratches but they're healed up now.
I currently have them in 29 gal long with a split tank method of chicken wire separating them. The 29 is what they were in before too. There was no competition either. There were 2 hides, plenty of food and treats for both, water, room... What could of gone wrong? How can I reintroduce them and is it even possible?

Gerbils are actually social animals. So never keep them singly. Siblings or family units of gerbils are usually affectionate with each other. They play with each other by fighting, boxing, chasing around etc. But some gerbils will fight always, and this will be difficult to distinguish whether they are fighting or playing. So carefully watch them. If they are fighting violently, this might be a serious play. Otherwise don’t take it seriously. Let them play.

pretty sure they were not playing because they ended up seriously wounding each other in a few seconds
