Awwww. Love his apartment! And look how slinky he is, curious sweetheart.

You know, Hector doesn't look like a PEW in those pictures. He looks more like a Himalayan or a marked Siamese.

So I wonder how I find out what kind of rat he is... any idea?

Asking someone who knows more than us. LOL. Sometimes though, the only way to know the proper color for a rat is to know his genetic background, as some colors will shade darker or lighter and look like another color. In the end unless we are breeders, it only really matters for our curiosity.

Here's a little about both colors so you maybe can figure out yourself?

Siamese and Himalayan are shaded marking modifications from one of the basic colors. In shaded rats there is the base color with markings of a second color on the base color.

Siamese rats have a beige base color and darker shading on their nose, ears, tail and base of tail, and on their feet. (Like siamese in other species) The shading of a siamese can be any color.

Himalayans have the same type of shading as a siamese rat except on a white base. Himalayan shading can also come in any color. Himalayans are born white.

My Zmei is a black eyed siamese which is same as above, but with black eyes. This is a dominant gene newly imported to the US, that 'covers' the light eyes of albino based rats and makes them black. This variety is called BES, and BEH by many breeders.

These shaded colors can have additional markings as well, which make it difficult to figure out what they are sometimes.

Capped: Colored marking on top of rats head with the rest of the body being white. (A cap that covers the rats whole face all the way to the back of their skull.) Many capped rats have a notch off the back of their cap (Like a V with the point going towards the nose)

Dalmatian:
Rat has spots on it's body and usually a colored 'collar' behind their ears.

(Source of my mostly cut and paste color information as well as examples of each of the colors mentioned: http://www.dreameyce.com/eagleseye/rattery/ratinfo/rat_markings.htm )

You can see why I'm not sure what he is. He's got a white body, but what looks like a beige cap on his head or even some kind of mismarked collar marking and the siamese/himi points on his nose. He could be a capped siamese, or a mismarked dalmation siamese, or a mismarked himi or something else entirely. I'm leaning towards capped siamese though.

Jimmie,
Super pictures, thanks for sharing those! Hector really does look like he is getting very attached to Mom and Dad, I can tell. :)
He looks VERY happy with you both...he almost always seems to be smiling, like that adorable photo of him getting water. What a sweet lil pumpkin he is! And that photo of him snuggling with you on your arm and getting sleepy looking...ahhh, that is just like when Klausse used to love just sitting with Daddy (my husband) right on his arm, and slowly getting drowsy. Male rats are definitely laid back and cuddly that way. If Hector is relaxed enough and feels safe enough to get all cuddly and sleepy with you on your arms, you know he loves and trusts you. You and Tonya are doing wonderfully with him. I can see the love in the pictures. I would say Hector adores you both right back.

And I know what you mean when you said you had "Hector Withdrawals". We all understand! You really start to miss your babies when you are away from them even for a short time. They really do become just as dear to us as human kids.

Yeah, I thought that maybe Hector was not a PEW (Pink Eyed White, in case you did not know what PEW means) because a lot of times his eyes look dark. He could definitely be a Himalayan or Siamese or at least have some of that in his genetic make up. Either way, he is just a cutie patootie! Great pictures!!

Thanks for noticing and commenting about little Zoe and Leo... I only had Zoe for like 3.. maybe 4 days... on the second to last day she was doing so good.. i could pick her up.. pet her.. feed her... then the next morning at like 7.. maybe 8.. i checked on her and she was not moving so well.. so I picker her up and held her in my hands for about an hour and fifteen minutes.. I could tell she was not doing good.. then at the end she had a seizure.. or heart attack.. or something... I dunno.. but she violently jerked in my hand and flipped over.. I turned her up and was petting her head and ear.. while she tried to take her last few struggled breathes.. then she passed. I was DEVISTATED!! I am a 350lb 39yr old man.. who used to pro wrestle.. Here i was with a wee little wild mouse clutched in my hands and I was crying my eyes out. I kept saying no.. no.. no.. and Im so sorry Zoe.. im so sorry... So my point was, that little mouse in 3 or 4 days stole my heart so much it is hard to put in words.. amazing. I will never forget that little mouse.. espically the night I caught her.. i went into the kitchen at like 3 in the morning.. and there she was .. perched on top of this black velvet knife holder thing.. Sitting there motionless.. thinking.. oh no.. did that big human see me.. hehe.. anyway i caught her that night and here we are a month later with Hector the Rat and I love him so...

I about cried again typing this about Zoe... Type at you all soon..

Thanks Talamos... I was talking to a breeder in central Florida.. and she saw a picture of Hector and she said he looks like a mismarked himalayan.. so we are going with that!! lol

PS. are there pictures of your little guys up?

Ugh, I'm dying to have pictures of my babies up, but the cord to my camera is missing. D; If that turns up or if I get a new one I'll be a picture posting maniac.
