Hi, everyone I'm a little new to this and I was just wondering.... I have had her for a few months now and I cant pick her up with out her peeing on me a little bit but this doesnt happen for a few mins, like she'll be on my soulder and I'll smell something and she peed on me not alot just like a few little drops everywhere. Is there something I can do to stop her from doing this?
My ratties don't usually mark on me, but they do everywhere else they go. I don't think there's a way to stop them. But really, it's just a tiny bit of pee. If it really bothers you try to keep a few shirts that you just wear when you have her out and then you won't have to worry about her ruining a nice one.
PS. I'm finally out of moderation, so my posts show up right away!
Thanks I really dont find it to be a problem it just stinks but oh well... hey I have a question mtmaughan on the bottom of your you have the names of your animals and a little cartoon next to it how do i get those?
Click the User CP link at the top. On the left should be a link that says Edit Signature. Click it and you can type whatever you want. Under the Smilies on the right, click the More link and it'll show you lots of Smilies to add.
My first rat did that all the time too. She would always leave little pee drops every where. Hers didn't smell though. It was a little embarassing when people would ask why she was leaving wet marks on my shirt. So I just said that she was drooling from being happy. lol. My baby rat doesn't do it yet. I am hoping she doesn't. I know that will gross my boyfriend out and really discourage him from holding her.
Isn't that the ultimate sign of affection from a rat? I think they're just scent marking you. That, along with grooming, are probably the best compliments you can get from a rat. Oh, and when they brux their teeth really loud as they're running around and playing...one of mine does it so loud I think his teeth are going to crack

My baby rat suckles on my finger tips and constantly licks my fingers. I know she is not doing it because they smell like food. I wash my hands before I hold her. She is a baby and I do not want her getting sick. I make my boyfriend wash his hands too. XD
oh you are loved. Rats will piddle on their owners telling the world that you belong to them. Males do it more often than females. Our males piddle our hands all of the time. I just play with them, then wash up. Our females, Inky & Oreo--RIP, also marked us. THere is very little you can do about it. It's just rat behavior. Icky--yeah, but.....
Mine always leaves little piddle drips on the back of my hands and on the cuffs of my sleeves. As soon as I get home I put on a t-shirt and a fleece zipped jacket (my Kila cloths). She is always licking my hands and occaisionally she'll run up to my face and lick my top lip. One time when I was talking she actually licked my tongue!
My Zorro tries to lick my lips, but I don't usually let him because I'm afraid that he might accidentally nip me or something, and that would hurt pretty bad on the lips. He's a chewer and likes to nibble on my fingers, so I'm paranoid about him and my lips!
My Kila is quite the nibbler as well, she chews on hang nails and any rough areas on my hands. When playing she grabs my fingers with her teeth, but has never bitten my hands. I always feed her by hand and she doesn't bite. Sometimes she will wait for me to pick food from her bowl and hand feed her (what a suck). Sometimes I give her babyfood and she prefers to lick that from my fingers, she doesn't like eating from a dish but will sometimes eat it from a spoon. I think you just have to trust them and not be nervous.
i took my exbf's brother's rat Bianca for a while for him when i lived w/the ex and she never dripped on me? but she did like to clean my neck and give me the goose bumps!!

I buy the jar baby food Heinz or Gerber. She really likes the apples & bananas, I also give her the apples & strawberries. Next week I'm going to try something new.
Thats normal rat behaviour.Males do it alot more then females.I have 7 males and so they are always marking everything, including me.But you can just change your clothes or get a shower. It is only a bit of rat pee!
Out of my rats,my 3 most kissy and affectionate rats are Zephyr (he is mommy's boy),Armand and Ninja. Those 3 have ALOT OF LOVE TO GIVE! They are always kissing, grooming and marking me!!
I give babyfood to my rats as well.It is a nice little treat.I give them all flavors, but they really love sweet potato and the fruit ones.Oh and they LOVE custard too! So do I,so I will share it with them.
I haven't given her the sweet potatoe in the baby food yet, but I have given her cooked sweet potatoe and she loves it.
I have a question, I may have have started a bad thing. I kive Kila every morning and in the evening a bowl with fresh food (it varies what it is) example; brown rice sprinkled with oatmeal, peas, banana or melon & other veggies. So she really doesn't touch her other food. She does eat a couple of the small rat blocks a week.. is that OK?
They do need their regular food--ie lab blocks. I don't think you did a bad thing. I give all my rats fresh stuff and/or parts of our dinner daily. My rats eat all of that and their rat mix/lab blocks. Rats do need fresh stuff, so don't stop doing that.
So for my rats they get a mix that I mix up--cereals, dried pasta, yorgurt covered raisins, dried bananas, whole oats etc. Plus lab blocks on top. In morning and evening they get extra stuff. THis morning the boys got leftover yogurt from my daughter and a cut up strawberry. My girls got leftover grits. Last night the guys got a piece of cheesy quesadilla with echinacea on it and a bit of salad. This morning both cages needed their regular food bowls refilled.
Thanks for the info, any particular type of cereal? I do give her plain cherios. I guess any kind with NO sugar would be ok? Do you just mix all this up together?
Hmmm--I'll tell ya my rats are pretty spoiled but here goes with my mix.
I use:
wheat chex, plain cheerios, puffed brown rice (man they love that)==it comes in just the cheap bagged variety at Wal-Mart, the springy type colored pasta, shredded wheat w/o frosting, some times raisin bran, use a low protein dog food (just a bit), dried banana chips, whole rolled oats (the slow cooked kind) and some unsalted peanuts in shell(not a lot). Some rats love all kinds of dried fruit, mine only like the banana chips. When I can find unsalted sunflower seeds, I put some of that in.
I mix all of that up together in a jar--it lasts me a week or so. Then I add a few lab blocks on top. The truth is the lab blocks go first. First to the stashing places, where they eat them later. I find some weeks they like part of the mix better than other. For a while they weren't eating the pasta---huh????. Now they want pasta and aren't eating much of the wheat chex. So when I see them pushing aside one part, the next time I mix up a batch, I go light on whatever they are tired of.
When you give them the extras, just make sure it isn't too much. She may just be full too.
