Hikaru is off of her meds now and is doing pretty well . Now she refuses to come near me, though . She won't even take treats from me which is unusual for her. Poor girl went through so much . Once I get her out of the cage she seems calm but that might just be because she's scared.

I still don't know if I should get another degu or not. I don't want her to be lonely but I'm also afraid of having another bad fight like that . Once she trusts me again I'll leave her cage door open whenever I'm around so she can hang out with me...I want to make sure she gets plenty of attention.

My mom took some pictures of her earlier. You can see one of her "battle wounds" in some of the pics (the shaved area).

Her fur is sticky in places because she hated the antibiotics and they would spill all over . So please excuse the state of her fur.

to be honest i really wouldnt get another, i would be too afraid of another fight. i know most think they should be housed in pairs or more... but it seams like alot are getting into serious fights often...

Regards getting her a friend its your personal choice at the end of the day. Its a hard decision to make but either way there is no proof Hikaru started the fight she could have just been defending herself as degus will do that if pushed into a corner, the fact she is also scared suggests something was adrift between them and the fight probably wasn't anything to do with her to start with (i've seen this behaviour myself when one has started a fight on another who was minding his own business at the time). Its a 50/50 chance either way but its very unlikely she would fight if introduced correctly but if she did then its something you would need to be prepared for. If you decided to get her a friend i would personally go down the route of getting two young females that way if she doesn't accept them they will have each other. You will know if she is missing the company of other degus and if you think she is then take it from there

The only problem is I don't know if I really have the room for two big degu cages if she didn't get along with the new degus . During bonding I have a smaller cage I set up but I wouldn't want to use it permanently.

Today she was eating like a maniac o_o. Maybe she's making up for the time she wasn't eating that much. I'll keep an eye on her just in case something's going on.

maybe you should wait a bit before getting any new friends anyway. make sure shes fully recovered.
you might notice her feeling lonely after a while, in which case a friend or two might be a good idea!

i'm sure she'll start trusting you again. shes been through a lot!

I'm starting to think that maybe she is lonely . For a week or so she was sleeping in her bed with a cardboard tube and then she suddenly got angry and ripped her bed apart. I remember a few days after the surgery she was talking to herself...chirping and warbling...sometimes it sounded kind of sad.

So even though I really don't feel ready to get another degu (I feel like I'm replacing her sister even though I'm not) I probably will as I don't want Hikaru to be depressed . I'll start calling around and see if anyone has any baby females.
