Do you know if there is much of a difference between rats and mice as far as being a pet is concerned? I dont know if you saw my post but my lirrle mouse/rat just died today... she was youmg and it broke my hart. I would like to get a pair in the near future.. but would like to know if i should get mice or rats.. what do you think?

I also have a mouse so I am the one to ask lol

Mice are more pocket size much smaller cages cheaper toys dont have to order food online

Rats - Bigger very smart very large cages you do have to order food online BUT they are just as loyal as a dog and learn to come to little sounds

Honestly the main difference is male rats can be housed together male mice cant plus size of course ... do you want something little you can have run around in a ball or something you can let free roam in a safe area? They both learn names and are smart IMO rats are more easy to socialize but that depends on the individual my rats even let me give them kisses But I love my mouse too

Its very hard for me to explain the difference mice tend to be A LOT more skittish than rats though and mice only live 1-2 years rats live 2-3 and both are very prone to health problems

What sweeties! I love that picture of Apollo in front of the spoon..looks like he is smiling! James, there were several posts with answers to your questions about rats and mice. Don't know if you have seen those yet? Rats are sooo sweet and affectionate. You would be blown away how quickly they can steal your heart. They LOVE to be loved by their people and they give so much love back. But they do need to get lots of free play outside of their housing on a daily basis...you cannot just leave them in their housing and not take them out. They crave outside time and exercise and love with you. I used to take my two boy rats out several times a day for free play time on top of our bed or on the couch and they would run around, stretch their legs and play.

Thanks for the info...

And of course I would never get an animal and leave it in a cage! The reason I want a rat/mouse is to love him/her.. give her afferction, play...

I have learned a lot about the differences between the two just reading posts here... 2 weeks ago i knew nothing...

Type at ya soon..

thats actually Yuki ... Apollo is the hooded ... Yuki is the one with the mask ...

Apollo runs away and he is a pain to catch but I still let him out and just control where he goes. Yuki just sits in my lap :)

thanks :) they are SO happy compared to when I got them I caught them wrestling around yesterday lol. as for diet they definitely get enough variety lol

Yup I have to feed them with my left hand while holding the camera in my right and making sure the camera is at the right distance so the flash does not make them glow lol ... its a feat.

Apollo is huge ... Yuki is just soft and fuzzy :)

I will have more pictures of everyone once I move them all to the same house lol.

AND when I move them over I will have a pet room :D So more free roam time for the boys

I am glad you love them bunches! Such sweethearts! And yes, it is so interesting how rats always have such individual personalities. They are lovable in their own special ways. There always seems to be a rebel or an outgoing and silly one and a quiet or a shy one. My two rat boys were like that. Our Russian Blue, Klausse, was sooo sweet and gentle and just loved to be loved. He was our special kissy boy. His brother Wolfgang, the brown agouti, was the little spunky one, full of curiousity and with a smart-aleck bratty type attitude, but also loved his Mommy (me!). So yes, it is great to see their personalities come out. :D

Well my rat Apollo bites anything thats not me that comes near his cage ... So near the cage no ...

But My situation is unique ... my cat is only 4 lbs and I have had her since she was 5 weeks and she has never tried to harm any of my rodents. HOWEVER I do not let her approach them on their free roam time but the rats are allowed to approach her. Usually I just lock all the cats out of my room during their free roam though

Got ya... Since you have had her since such a young age.. I guess she sees the rats as family.. not the enemy. Thats good. Keep an eye on them tho.. I would hate to see something bad happen to any of your furry friends.
